Happy Friday! Time for some OBX Link Love!
Outer Banks stories come at me fast and furious. It is amazing how much online coverage the OBX gets on a weekly basis.
There’s no way I could cover every great story on this fantastic blog, but I’m happy we started the weekly Link Love so I don’t feeling like I’m leaving anything out.
This week we have a couple links from the New York Times (yep, the NYT!), a look back at one of the most fierce storms the OBX has seen, some current events, and some unanswered questions about the famed Rt. 12.
Let’s dive in, shall we? We’ll go in chronological order today; looking back, taking a peek at the current happs, and then some thoughts on the future.
Ash Wednesday Storm – 50th Anniversary
We’ll start with a look back. This week marks the 50th Anniversary of the “Ash Wednesday Storm.” From what I hear, this storm was a doozey…for real, a DOOOOZEY! Hurricane Irene was bad, but she was no Ash Wednesday Storm. Here are a couple articles for your reading pleasure.

Local OBX News
- Overturned boat leads to life-saving rescue in the Roanoke Sound.
- Here’s a fun story. After month’s of being submerged in the ocean, a waterproof camera turns up, and through Facebook, the owner is found. 10 months, 15 miles and 1 major hurricane later, lost memories are returned. The camera was shot, but they were able to get some cool pictures off it.
Cool New Science Tools on the OBX
Here’s the first of two New York Times articles – I know, two NYT articles, crazy! The Outer Banks is basically a sandbar dangling out in the fierce Atlantic Ocean. As you might imagine, this leads to erosion. Not a favorite topic of discussion on the OBX, but a necessary discussion to have. Luckily, the OBX is home to some of the top scientists in the field, and they recently got a cool new tool to help them understand the erosion process is much more detail. Check out Claris.
Surf Break
It’s been a pretty slow winter for surf on the Outer Banks, but here’s a video of local OBX surfer, Dallas Tolson tearing up a February swell.
The Future of OBX’s Rt. 12
We’ve looked at the past and the present, now let’s see what the future holds. Erosion. Well, that’s a definite. But how do we handle it. Here are two good articles looking into the future possibilities for Rt. 12 heading down through Hatteras. Unfortunately, it seems like more questions than answers, but at least the discussions are taking place. Tough to find a perfect solution.
